Kaia Privacy Policy

Version 2026-09-18. This is the English original; it governs.

Kaia is an app for learning to speak English. To teach speaking, it has to listen: you record yourself, and the recording is turned into text and checked. This page explains exactly what that involves, what is kept, and who else sees it.

Kaia is published by Kirill Vasilyev, a sole proprietor based in Armenia ("we", "us"). Our postal address is available on request. If you have a question about anything here, write to kirappledev@gmail.com.

1. What we collect

WhatWhenWhy
An account identifier — a random identifier created for your device On first launch, automatically. You are not asked for anything and you do not register. So your progress belongs to someone. It is not derived from your device, your phone number or anything about you.
Your email address Only if you use Sign in with Apple. Apple passes us an address each time you sign in; we store it the first time and never overwrite what we already hold. You may choose to hide your address — in which case we receive one of Apple's relay addresses and never your real one. To identify your account if you sign in again or on another device. We do not send marketing email.
Voice recordings When you tap to speak in a lesson, an exam, or a Free Talk conversation. To turn what you said into text so it can be checked. See section 3 — these are not stored.
Transcripts of what you said, and text you type instead of speaking Every Free Talk conversation, and lesson answers where the checker found a mistake in your English. To reply to you in a conversation, to show you what was heard, and to build the list of your own mistakes the app reviews with you.
Your learning progress — lessons finished, dates, your streak As you use the app. To show you where you are and to keep your place across devices when you are signed in.
Your subscription status If you subscribe. To know whether your subscription is active. We never see your card — all payment happens through Apple.
Usage analytics — which screens you open, which lessons you start and finish, which things fail, and your approximate location (country or region, worked out from your IP address) As you use the app. To see which parts of the app work and which are abandoned. These events are not tied to your account identifier or your email.
Crash reports — where the app stopped, the device model and OS version If the app crashes. To fix the crash. Crash reports are not tied to your account.

We do not collect your contacts, your photos, your precise location, your advertising identifier or your browsing on other apps and websites. Kaia contains no advertising and no tracking for advertising purposes.

2. Speaking is processed by AI services, and you are asked first

Before the first time Kaia uses your microphone, it asks you to agree to this, and tells you which services are involved. If you decline, nothing is recorded — you can still use every part of a lesson that does not involve speaking. You will be asked again the next time you tap to speak.

When you speak:

Your recording is excluded from Deepgram's model improvement program: every request the app makes carries that instruction, so your voice is not used to train their speech models and is not retained by them after the transcription is returned.

Anthropic does not use this data to train its models, under its commercial API terms, and deletes it within 30 days.

3. Voice recordings are not kept — anywhere

This is worth stating on its own, because people reasonably assume the opposite.

Your recording is held in memory on our server for as long as one request takes, sent to Deepgram, and discarded. It is never written to our database and never written to a disk. There is no field anywhere in our systems that a voice recording could be stored in. The app also deletes the recording from your phone as soon as it has been sent, whether the check succeeded, failed, or you cancelled it.

What is kept is the text. The transcript of a Free Talk conversation stays with that conversation, and a lesson answer stays only if the checker found a mistake in it. That text is what makes the review of your own mistakes possible, which is the point of the feature.

4. Who else receives your information

WhoWhat they receiveWhat for
Deepgram Your voice recording Converting speech to text. Excluded from their model training; not retained afterwards.
Anthropic Transcripts, Free Talk conversation text, and the sentence the lesson expected Checking your answer and writing your conversation partner's replies. Not used for training; deleted within 30 days.
RevenueCat Your account identifier and your App Store purchase status Managing your subscription.
Google (Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics) App usage events and crash reports, with no account identifier attached, and your IP address Understanding how the app is used and fixing crashes.
Apple Sign in with Apple, and every payment Signing you in and taking payment. We never see your payment details.
Railway Everything we store, because our servers and database run there Hosting.
Cloudflare Nothing of yours Storing and serving the course's own audio, which we recorded before release.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with anyone for their own purposes. The services above act on our instructions.

Where this happens. Our own servers — the app and the database — run in the United States, in Railway's US West region. Deepgram receives recordings on its default United States endpoint; we do not use its European or Australian ones. Anthropic stores data in the United States and, by its own account, may route requests for processing to selected countries in the United States, Europe, Asia or Australia.

So if you use Kaia from anywhere else, your information is transferred out of your country — principally to the United States.

The United States has no general national data protection law equivalent to the EU's GDPR or Japan's APPI, and its protections for personal data are not treated as equivalent to theirs.

5. How long we keep things

6. Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside the app, in Profile → Settings. It does not require writing to us and it is not reversible.

Deleting your account removes your account identifier, your email address if we hold one, your progress, your recorded mistakes, and every Free Talk conversation with it — the whole transcript, not merely your name detached from it. A transcript of somebody speaking is not made anonymous by removing the link to them, so we delete it rather than keep it.

Your subscription is separate: it belongs to your Apple ID, and it is cancelled in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, not here.

7. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, or to receive a copy. Deletion is built into the app (section 6). For anything else, write to kirappledev@gmail.com and we will answer.

8. Children

Kaia is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect, who receives it, or how long we keep it, we will publish a new version here with a new version number, and ask you to agree again where your agreement is what allows the processing.
